MARTHA JANE HOTT

Martha Jane Hott, 89,  of Romney, WV,   died Friday, September 30, 2011 at Hampshire Memorial Long Term Care, Romney, WV.   Mrs. Hott was born on March 20, 1922 in Rosemont, WV, the  daughter of the late George William and Annie (Reed) Smith.  

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Kirk Hott, Sept. 22, 1966; one son, Samuel David Hott; one daughter, Anna Mae Dean, three step-sons, two step-daughters, six brothers, two sisters and four grandchildren.

Mrs. Hott was employed at Hampshire Memorial Hospital from 1959 until 1962.  She was a homemaker and member of the Springfield Presbyterian Church. She was an active volunteer having peeled many apples for making apple butter at the Burlington Apple Harvest Festival.  She was also a member of the Ebenezer Community Educational Outreach Service Club (CEO’s), TOPS, and the Ship Program.

Mrs. Hott is survived by:  five Sons:  Robert Andrew Cleaver and wife, Shirley, Burlington, WV,  Richard K. Hott and wife, Barbara, LaVale, MD, George W. Hott, Wiley Ford, WV, James D. Hott and Bonnie, Romney, WV,  Austin Ray Hott and wife, Brenda, Stafford, VA; three  Daughters:  Thelma Jane Cooper and husband, David, Colonial Beach, VA,  Donna E. Howell and husband, Michael, Spotsylvania, VA,  Shirley A. Baker and husband, Jack, Moorefield, WV, one  Step-Daughter:  LaVada Long, Short Gap, WV; one  Sister:  Edna Mays, Burlington, WV;  43 Grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, WV on Sunday, October 2, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.  The funeral service will be at the Shaffer Funeral Home on Monday, October 3 at 11:00 a.m.   with Rev. Kenneth D. Caplinger officiating.  Interment  will be at Springfield Hill Cemetery, Springfield, WV

 

CHARLES WINTON SHREWSBURY

Charles Winton Shrewsbury died at home on Tuesday, September 27th, 2011 after a long illness.
He was born March 20, 1934, in Helen, West Virginia, the son of the late L. Winton and Florence Stickler Shrewsbury. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorcas Taylor and Phyllis Powell.

After graduating from Mark Twain High School, he attended West Virginia University, where he majored in Economics, was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, and met his future wife, Margaret Holt Early. After college, Mr. Shrewsbury was employed by Bendix and by American Credit Indemnity in Baltimore, from which he retired as vice-president after 32 years. He then returned to his native West Virginia and pursued his hobbies of photography and furniture making.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Margaret; one sister, Beulah Lewis of Helen, WV; son Charles of Romney, WV; son Steven and wife  Carolyn of Lutherville, MD; granddaughters Samantha and Carrie, and granddaughter and grandson-in-law Lindsey and Austin Widdowson, all of Baltimore, MD; eight nieces and four nephews; numerous great-nieces/nephews and great-great-nieces/nephews; and many friends.

At his request, his body has been cremated. Visitation will be at the Shaffer Funeral Home in Romney on Friday, October 14th, 2011  from  4  to 8 PM.   A memorial service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, October 15th, 2011 at 11 AM with the Rev. Frank Coe officiating.

HELEN MARGURITE NICKLESON

Helen Margurite Nickleson,  89,  of Romney, WV,  died on September 12, 2011 at Dawn View Center, Fort Ashby, WV.    She was born on June 18, 1922 in Des Moines, Iowa, the  daughter of the late Charles and Ella (Taylor) Kessel.  Helen was also  preceded in death by her step-mother, Alice McNabb;  her husband, George Lee Nickleson;  one daughter, Dorothy Jean Evans;  three brothers, Alan Kessel, Joe Kessel and Baker Kessel;  and four sisters, Ethel Sword, Laura Mathias, Florence Mathias, and Bertha Campbell.

Helen is survived by: two   Sons:  Roger Lee Nickleson and wife, Pat, Augusta, WV and Robert D. Nickleson and wife, Charlene, Romney, WV; one  Daughter:  Mary Ellen Ditoro, Bellvue, Nebraska; one  Sister:  Alma Corbin, Romney, WV; six  Grandchildren:  Tommy, Jimmy, David, Donnie, Jonathan and Angie and eleven  Great Grandchildren

The family will receive friends at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, WV on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 from 6-8 p.m.  The funeral will be Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at the Shaffer Funeral Home  with Pastor James Mou officiating.  Interment will be at Ebenezer Cemetery, Romney, WV

 

GERTRUDE ELIZABETH LEE

Gertrude Elizabeth Lee,  87,  of Winchester, VA, formerly of Romney, WV,  went home to be with the Lord on Monday,  September 5, 2011  in Winchester, VA with her loving family and friends at her bedside.   Gertrude was born on December 4, 1923 in Bridgewater, VA, the daughter of  the late Mary (Lee) Willis.    Besides her mother she was preceded in death by two sons; one  brother, Woodrow Lee and one sister, Betty Willis.

Gertrude was a mother to many having worked as a domestic,  caring for many families and their homes.  She enjoyed her plants, gardening, and reading and writing poetry.  Gertrude had a special talent for reciting poems.  She was a devoted member of Joy In Christ ministries with Pastor Eddie Edmond as her pastor.  Gertrude was known as a “prayer warrior” and had a prayer for anybody in need.  She blessed many lives with her “card ministry” so in honor of her,  please send someone a card.

Surviving are four  Sons:  Kenneth Lee, Bunker Hill, WV,  Randolph Lee, Winchester, VA,  Anthony Lee, Cumberland, MD, and  Johnny Lee, Romney, WV; two  Daughters:  Julia Long and Ronna Edmond of Winchester, VA; one  Sister:  Mary Walker, Romney, WV;  22 Grandchildren and 12 Great Grandchildren

The family will receive friends at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, WV on Thursday, September 8, 2011 from 6-8 p.m.   Her going home service will be Friday, September 9, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney with  Pastor Mark Kennerly officiating.  Interment  will be at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery, Romney, WV

 

HELEN LOUISE YEAGER BURTON

Helen Louise Yeager Burton,  87,  of Romney, WV,  went to be with the Lord on September 2, 2011 at the Evergreen Assisted Living, Waynesburg, Pa.  Helen was born on January 4, 1924 in Terra Alta, WV, the daughter of the late Franklin Arch and Gladys  Whitehair.   Besides her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her  first husband of nearly 50 years, Richard E. Yeager;  her second husband of one year, Harold Burton; and one brother, John Keller Whitehair.

Helen had many lifetime interests including listening to classical and jazz music, watching college football and old movies on TV, reading murder mysteries, collecting old kitchen gadgets, and studying history, economics and politics.  She loved West Virginia and valued fellowship with other West Virginians at the Romney Senior Center.

Surviving are one son:  Steven C. Yeager, Switzerland, one  daughter:  Kathleen L. Myres, Lakewood, WA; one  Sister:  Josephine Genua, Accident, MD; six  Grandchildren; five  Great Grandchildren; and five nephews.

The family will receive friends at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, WV on Friday, September 9, 2011 from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m.  A graveside service and interment will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Ebenezer Cemetery, Romney, WV with  Dr. Roy Knight officiating.
