DOLORES JEAN KERNS Dolores Jean Kerns, 67, Romney, WV died Saturday, Oct. 29th, 2011 at home, She was born March 25, 1944, in Morgantown, WV, the daughter of the late Alfred A. Decker and Josephine (Shrout) Decker. Preceding her in death were two sons, James G. Turner and Gary G. Turner and a brother, William F. Decker. Mrs. Kern’s and her husband moved to Romney 20 years ago, leaving her hometown of Morgantown, WV. She loved and was dedicated to her church, the Community Bible, Assembly of God. Her interests were many, including her career as a social worker for Child Services and anything that had to do with the betterment of circumstances for children. She enjoyed reading Christian novels, baking, cooking, and in particular, time spent at home sitting by the river enjoying nature and wildlife. First and foremost was her love for her family and special times spent together. She was never bothered or concerned about dying, and felt that “Going Home” was something to be cherished. She is survived by her husband; William A. Kerns, Sr.; seven sons; Randy A. Kerns of Fairmont, WV, Robert L. Kerns of Huntsville, AL, Jefferey A. Turner, William A. Kerns, Jr., Bradley A. Kerns, Noel R. Kerns all of Morgantown, WV, Ernest R. Kerns of Florida; two daughters; Joyce M. Brady-Turner of Martinsburg, WV and Judy L. Turner of Marietta, PA; one sister, Carolyn Decker of Louisiana and 28 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. The family will receive friends at the Shaffer Funeral Home in Romney, WV on Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011 from 6 to 8 PM. The funeral service will be at the Community Bible Assembly of God Church (Poland Hollow Rd., Romney ) on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011 at 11 am with Rev. Dan Dennison officiating. Interment will be in Ebenezer Cemetery, Romney, WV. Memorial Contributions may be made to the family to help with expenses.
NELLIE ALICE SMITH Nellie Alice Smith, 90, of Romney, WV passed away on October 27, 2011 at her home surrounded by her loving family and under the care of the Hospice of the Panhandle. Mrs. Smith was born on April 20, l921 in Hoy, WV, the daughter of the late Charles Coyle and Lula D. (Smith) Nealis. Besides her parents, Nellie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lloyd W. Smith on December 22, 1975. She was also preceded by 8 brothers and sisters making her the last surviving member of her immediate family. Nellie was a Christian and attended the Romney First United Methodist Church. She devoted her life to her children and their families always lending a helping hand to family and friends. Nellie loved working in her flower gardens greeting all who passed by with her lovely smile. She was a special lady who was loved by all who knew her. Nellie was the loving mother to one son, Darryl Nealis and three daughters, Bonnie Smith, Nancy Merritt and Margie Smith. She has seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, one great great grandson and many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. There will be no visitation. A graveside service will be held on Sunday, October 30, 2011 at Ebenezer Cemetery, Romney, WV with Dr. Roy Knight officiating. Interment will be at Ebenezer Cemetery, Romney, WV. G. PAULINE MAUK G. Pauline Mauk, 94, of Romney, WV, died at her residence, under the care of the Hospice of the Panhandle and surrounded by her loving family, on Sunday, October 23, 2011. Pauline was born on April 21, 1917 near Grantsville, MD in Garrett County, the daughter of the late Jacob J. and Naomi (Miller) Glotfelty. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Ronald “Ronnie” E. Paul, Sr.; three brothers, Ralph, Mike and Harold Glotfelty; and one sister, Thelma McIlwee. Pauline grew up in Grantsville and graduated from Grantsville High School, Class of 1934. Even at a young age she was a hard worker and had various jobs, one of them being the first girl to deliver newspapers in her hometown. Pauline worked at Curl’s Camera Shop in Cumberland, MD in the early 1950’s. While working at Curl’s, Pauline traveled several times to Rochester, NY to attend classes graduating from the Eastman Kodak Sales Training Center. This led to a lifelong hobby of photography. Pauline has been co-owner and operator of the Koolwink Motel in Romney, WV since 1955. She rented rooms, took reservations, and helped supervise daily operatons for over 50 years. Pauline retired from the office in 2004 but customers still ask about her to this day. Her tireless work ethic and her natural ability to work with people has helped make the Koolwink Motel what it is today. She was a true nature lover, and enjoyed anything in nature, especially bird watching. Other hobbies included cooking and photography. Her greatest love was for her family and she was a wonderful homemaker. Pauline was a loving, dedicated wife and mother. Surviving are her husband of 57 years, Wallace Mauk, one Son: Jay L. Mauk, Romney, WV, one Daughter: Kay L. Mauk Lee and husband, Robert, Levels, WV; two Grandchildren: Ronald “Ronnie” E. Paul, Jr. and wife, Nancy and Brenda Hopkins and husband, Billy; one great granddaughter: Brittney Hopkins and two nephews: Joe and Bob Glotfelty. The family will receive friends at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, WV on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. The funeral service will be at the Shaffer Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. Beth Jacobson officiating. High St., Romney, WV 26757 JAMES BRIGGS CHURCHILL James Briggs Churchill was born on February 9, 1919 and passed away at home quietly with no fuss or fanfare on October 20, 2011 at 7:15 pm. He lived a long life and left legacies both in terms of people and acts of loving kindness. His first wife, Florence P. Churchill, and his grandsons, Andrew P. Churchill-Stine and Michael J. Hovan, preceded him in death. Two brothers and a sister preceded James death; they are Edmund P. Churchill, Thomas H. Churchill, and Louise Stewart McKinney. Also, preceded in death are Helen Snow (stepdaughter), and William Snow (step grandson). His two sisters, Elizabeth Dietz of Edison, NJ and Sallie R. Churchill of Ann Arbor, MI, also survive James. His second wife, Helen Simerly Churchill, survives him and James’ three daughters, Florence Churchill-Stine of Tacoma, WA; Nancy P. Clark of Rio, WV; and Christine Quicksey of Ypsilanti, MI. Three stepsons, Robert, Victor, and Philip Simerly, survive James also. James had many grandchildren; they are: James, Suzanne, Edward, Fred, Brett, Erik, Catharine, Jynnifer, and Christopher. His Step grandchildren are Dalton, Jennifer, Laura Marie, David, Nichole, Michael, and Brian. James’ Great Grandchildren are: Sarah, Tashina, Lashelle, Alisha, Elizabeth, Parker, Phoenix, Megan, and Levi. His Step Great Grandchildren are Niko, Marco, Dylan, Bobbie, Shawn, Brayden, Stephen, Ryan, and Peyton. In addition, James had one Great Great Granddaughter, Alina. Jim Churchill was active in the Episcopal Church for his entire life. He acted as the director of the Highland Educational Project in McDowell County for a number of years and he ran the Diocesan Bookstore at Peterkin Conference Center until he retired at age 85. In his younger years, Jim was active on the school board while his children attended school in NJ. He was a Fire-Police Chief and a newspaper reporter in addition to his job as an accountant for Union Carbide Corporation. Jim was an uncle to a number of very special men and women. By his support and love they have grown up and had successful families of their own. Mr. Churchill lived a life of service to his community and to his church from childhood until old age. For many, his actions served as models of how to be a Godly and loving person. Mr. Churchill had a way of inspiring others to become the best they could be and to stretch further than they thought possible. He was blessed by having two marriages that lasted for a total of 61 years. He served in the US Army during World War II despite having lost one of his eyes in an accident when he was nine years of age. During his life he traveled extensively, touching the lives of more people than we can count and providing inspiration to others to love freely, live fully, and to count their blessings in terms of people and not money. The love and encouragement he shared with others can never be counted but the example he provided served as a beacon to family, friends, and acquaintances who were touched by his life. His family will miss his sense of humor, his plainspoken advice, his practical approach to life, and of course his warmth and love. Jim’s daughters extend a special thank you to Helen, their step mother, for her love and care to our father. In addition, we give a heartfelt thank you to Dalton for all of his care to our Dad. We love you, all. The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 23, 2011 from 2 – 6 pm at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, WV. A Memorial Service will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, Oct. 24, 2011 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 301 S. Mineral St., Keyser, WV, with Rt. Rev. Martin Townsend officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Highland Educational Project (HEP), P. O. Box 204, Welch, WV 24801. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
WILLIAM RICHARD "BILL" BOWMAN William Richard “Bill” Bowman, 75, of Romney, West Virginia, died suddenly Friday, October 7, 2011, at his home. Mr. Bowman was born in Hampshire County, West Virginia, on February 13, 1936, the son of Elihu Frank and Rose Lee (Shanholtzer) Bowman. He married Nancy Lou Presgraves on September 9, 1961, in Romney. Bill and Nancy were blessed to have just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons; Gregory William Bowman (and wife Janie) of Winchester, Virginia, and Todd M. Bowman of Houston, Texas; two granddaughters, Isabella Rose and Olivia Camille Dickens-Bowman of Winchester; a sister, Nellie Kathleen Smith; and many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and close friends. Besides his parents, Mr. Bowman was predeceased by his brother George Junior Bowman, and three sisters; Claris McDonald, Gyneth “Tonnie” Keister, and Emogene Conkling. Mr. Bowman retired from Potomac Edison/Allegheny Power in 1996, after 30 years of service. Bill was an active member of the Romney Presbyterian Church for over 45 years having served as Elder and on nearly every committee within the church. He graduated from Romney High School class of 1954, and went on to serve in the United States Army and Reserves from 1954-1958. He received his Associates Degree in Business from Potomac State College. Throughout his lifetime, Mr. Bowman chaired or was an active member of many community organizations, including the Hampshire Jaycees, Hampshire County Little League Baseball, Hampshire County Board of Parks & Recreation, and the Board of Eastern West Virginia Community Action. He was a member of Allegheny Power Quarter Century Club and the Clinton Lodge No. 86 A.F. & A.M. VICTORIA VIRGINIA HOTT Victoria Virginia Hott, 100, of Springfield, WV was called home to be with the Lord Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at WMHS, Cumberland, MD. She was born on July 17, 1911 in Springfield, WV, the daughter of the late Charles Homer and Margaret Virginia (Fields) Haines. Mrs. Hott was preceded in death by her husband, Irvin Ray Hott, November 14, 1972; two brothers, Howard E. Haines and Charles H. Haines, Jr.; four sisters, Margaret Haines, Anna Dale Haines, M. Kathleen Short, and Betty F. Barnes; and one great grandson, Travis Ray Everett. Mrs. Hott was retired as a dietician from the West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and Blind, Romney. She was a member of the Springfield United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women, Springfield. Mrs. Hott is survived by: two Daughters: Betty Lou Yoder and husband, Olin, Linthicum, MD, and Barbara Ann Everett and husband, Robert “Skeets”, Springfield, WV; one Brother: Kenneth F. Haines, and wife, Madge, Capon Bridge, WV; two Sisters: Irma R. Pyles and husband, Edgell, Ft. Ashby, WV;; and Mary Frances Brelsford, Short Gap, WV; six Grandchildren: Debbie Collins, Kevin Everett, Cindy Yoder, Cheryl Everett, Megan Gorsuch, Andrea Everett; four 4 Great Grandchildren; eight Great Great Grandchildren; Several nieces and nephews and dear friend, Agnes Parsons The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 6, 2011 from 4-7 pm at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, WV. The funeral was Friday, October 7, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Springfield United Methodist Church, Springfield, WV with Rev. Kenneth D. Caplinger and Pastor Lucy Webster officiating. Serving as Pall Bearers were: Tommy Pyles, Bob Barnes, Wallace Whitacre, Kevin Everett, Chris Collins, and Jeremy Collins.
Interment was in Springfield Hill Cemetery, Springfield, WV The family would like to thank the aids and nurses who lovingly cared for Victoria at Dawn View .
