VERGIE HOKE MCKEE Vergie Hoke McKee, 95, of Romney, WV died on March 1, 2010 at the Hampshire Center, Romney, WV with family and friends at her side. Vergie was born on November 18, 1914 in Rock Oak, Hampshire County, WV, the daughter of the late Dallas G. and Anna Funk Hoke. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Edgar H. McKee, two brothers and two sisters. Vergie lost her husband at a very young age and continued to work retiring from the Celanese after 35 years. She assisted Dr. J. D. Brown and delivered many babies in the county; did orchard work and housecleaning; her joys were caring for others and putting others ahead of herself, gardening, quilting, sewing and most of all raising her family. Surviving are one daughter, Betty J. Heavener, Romney, WV; two sons, Chester F. McKee and wife Elnora, Augusta, WV and E. Homan McKee, Points, WV and three special nieces; Shirley Wolford, Romney, WV, Carol Schott, Highview, WV and Donna Baker, Augusta, WV; nine grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren. Friends will be received on Wednesday, March 3, 2010, 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, WV. Funeral services will be at 11;30 a.m., Thursday, March 4, 2010, at Romney First Baptist Church, Romney, WV with Rev. Jack Hanks and Rev. Dr. Stephon Reed officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Gore, Va. CHARLES ROBERT HERRIOTT Charles Robert Herriott, 92, of Romney, WV, died at Loving Arms Assisted Living, Front Royal, VA on February 14, 2010. Mr. Herriott was born on December 4, 1917 in Romney, WV, the son of the late Charles F. and Nannie Blue (Long) Herriott . He was was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy “Dot” (Haines) Herriott, October 31, 2007 and his sister, Nancy Elizabeth Fisher. Mr. Herriott graduated from Romney High School, Class of 1936. He was a life long farmer and a veteran of WWII having served in the U.S. Army in the 1068 Signal Corps attached to the British Eighth Air Force. He served in the African and Italian Campaigns. His company was instrumental in establishing the air base in Foggia. He was awarded three Bronze Stars, EAME Theater Ribbon, four Overseas Bars, and a Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Herriott was a member of the American Legion Hampshire Post #91 and the VFW Wappocomo Post 1101 of Romney, WV and was a life long member of the Romney Presbyterian Church having served as a Deacon and was elected an Elder. He was Past Master of the Clinton Lodge No. 86 A.F. & A. M., a member of the Farm Bureau for over 60 years, former member of the Board of Supervisors of the Potomac Valley Conservation District, a charter member of the Springfield Ruritan Club and a member of the Board of Directors of the Hampshire County Co-Op, all of Romney. Mr. Herriott is survived by: one Daughter: Margaret Blue “Missy” Herriott, Front Royal, VA; one Son: Charles B. “Chip” Herriott and wife, Beth, Romney, WV, one 1 Niece: Nancy Ann Judd, Shanks, WV; three Nephews: John Charles Fisher and William Reece Fisher both of Berkeley Springs, WV and Robert Ross Fisher, Romney, WV. GARLAND “BUZZ” R. NICKLESON Garland “Buzz” R. Nickleson, 64, of Romney, WV, died on Thursday, February 11, 2010 at his residence. Mr. Nickleson was born on December 18, 1945 in Romney, WV, the son of Kathleen (Sulser) Nickleson, Romney, WV and the late James Nickleson. In addition to his father, Mr. Nickleson was preceded in death by one son, Jefferson Catlett; one daughter, Vylinda Nickleson; and one sister, LLona Mowery. “Buzz” had an avid interest in Indian artifacts, boxing, and collecting Elvis memorabilia. He is survived by his special friend of many years, Carolyn Rohrbaugh, three Sons: Allen Catlett, Augusta, WV, Billy Catlett, Ft. Ashby, WV, and Bobby Catlett, Pleasant Dale, WV; one Daughter: Carmen Nickleson, Stephens City, VA; one Brother: Jimmy Nickleson, St. Mary’s, WV; and and a special nephew who was like a brother, Shane Nickleson, Augusta, WV; two Sisters: Burma Ayers, Romney, WV and Sharon Helmick, Moorefield, WV; and eight Grandchildren The family will receive friends on Monday, February 15, 2010 from 6-8 pm at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, WV. Funeral services will be Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at 11:00 am at the Shaffer Funeral Home, with Pastor Stephon Reed officiating. Interment will be at Old Pine Cemetery, Purgitsville, WV. JAMES W. SCHWEITZER James W. Schweitzer, 74, of Levels, WV, died Feb. 7, 2010 at his residence. Mr.Schweitzer was born Feb. 6, 1936 in Washington, D.C. the son of the late Paul B. and Agnes (Mahoney) Schweitzer. Mr. Schweitzer served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960 having been stationed in Alaska. He is survived by one brother: John Schweitzer, Queenstown, MD and three sisters: Jean S. Meade and Joellen Bailey both of Odenton, MD and Joy Pucciarelle, Alexandria, VA. Interment will be at a later date in the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery, Crownsville, MD VERDIE NELSON SHERMAN Verdie Nelson Sherman, 89, of Romney, WV died Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at the Hampshire Memorial Hospital, Romney, WV. Mrs. Sherman was born on May 1, 1920 in Petersburg, WV, the daughter of the late Jess and Artie (Mace) Shirk. Due to inclement weather all services will be Thursday, February 4, 2010 at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney at 9:00 am with Rev. Norman Landis officiating. Interment will be at Lahmansville Cemetery, Lahmansville, WV.
EDWARD “EDDIE” LEE GANOE
P-Sgt. E-7 Edward L. Ganoe served in the US Navy for 2 years, 9 months, and 8 days during WWII and served 18 years in the US Army receiving the following awards: Good Conduct Medal with Bronze Clasp and Four Loops, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with One Silver and Two Bronze Service Stars, WWII Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Germany), National Defense Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation. In 1959 while stationed in Germany he met and married his wife, Rosemarie. Upon returning to Romney, “Eddie” was employed and retired from the WV School for the Deaf and Blind having worked in purchasing. He was a life member of the VFW Wappocomo Post 1101 and the Romney Volunteer Fire Department. “Eddie” enjoyed many hobbies including stain glass art and woodworking. He was a wine meister delighting friends and family with his special dandelion wine. The family will receive friends at their residence on Sunday, January 31, 2010 from 12 noon until 4:00 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Panhandle; 122 Waverly Ct., Martinsburg, WV 25401 or donate blood to the organization of choice. NEVA JEANNE TUTWILER Neva Jeanne Tutwiler, 63, of Augusta, WV died January 22, 2010 at her residence. She was born on October 14, 1946 in Cumberland, MD, the daughter of the late Melvin and Neva Elizabeth Kesner. Besides her parents, Mrs. Tutwiler was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph L. Tutwiler, Sr.; one son, Ralph “Chip” Landis; and one granddaughter, Janene L. Tutwiler. Mrs. Tutwiler was a graduate of Lord Fairfax Community College and Shenandoah University. She retired from the Winchester Medical Center where she had been Charge Nurse on the Cardiac Telemetry Floor. She attended the Tearcoat Church of the Brethren, Augusta, WV. Surviving are: three Sons: Jay L. Tutwiler and Joseph L. Tutwiler, Jr. both of Augusta, WV and Joshua L. Tutwiler, Capon Bridge, WV; two Daughters: Joanna L. Tutwiler, Martinsburg, WV and Kelly Landis; two Brothers: Vernon Kesner and Kenny Kesner; PATRICK PHILLIPS DUNCAN Patrick Phillips Duncan, 87, of Romney, WV died January 12, 2010 at the Hampshire Memorial Long Term Care Center, Romney, WV. Mr. Duncan was born on July 17, 1922, the son of the late William and Mary (Sulser) Duncan. Services will be held at a later date.
