HERBERT JOSEPH BERST

Herbert Joseph Berst, 89,  of New Port Richey, Florida formerly of Three Churches, WV died December 31, 2008 at his residence.   He was born on April 12, 1919 in Erie, PA  the son of the late Adolph Frank and Tillie (Hesch) Berst.

He was preceded in death by: one son, Arthur Raymond Berst, one brother, Jospeh Berst, and two sisters, Maria Weaver and Magdalene Clark.

Mr. Berst was a veteran of WWII having served in the Army Air Corps.  Before moving to Three Churches, Mr. Berst was employed as a bus driver in  Washington, D.C.

He is survived by:  one son, Herbert Berst, Takoma Park, MD, two  Grandchildren and two Great grandchildren

Interment  will be private  in Indian Mound Cemetery, Romney, WV.

WAYNE BRADFORD PAYTON

Wayne Bradford Payton, 65,  of Springfield, WV  went home to be with Jesus on Christmas Day, December 25, 2008 at his residence.  He was born on May 12, 1943 in Tollgate, WV, the  son of the late Ray Talbert Payton and Bertha G. (Smith) Payton Woodson. 

Mr. Payton moved from Ritchie County, was raised in Hampshire County, and graduated from Hampshire High School, Class of l961.   He served in the United States Air Force at the time of the Viet Nam War.  Mr. Payton was a member of the Boilermakers Local 667, Charleston, WV and retired in 1998.  He then became a real estate agent working for the Payton Family Realty Company.  He was a member of the Springfield Assembly of God Church, Springfield, WV.   Mr. Payton enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, fishing, hunting, woodworking, and blue grass gospel music.

He is survived by his wife of  44 years, Barbara Sue (Deem)  Payton; one  Son:  Daniel Ray Payton and wife, Nancy, Springfield, WV; one  Daughter:  Melissa Marie McLaughlin, Springfield, WV; two  Brothers:  Skip Payton and wife, Pam, Kingsport, TN and Dewey Carl Payton and wife, Bonnie, Ft. Ashby, WV; three  Sisters:  Doris Jean Matheny and husband, Sam, Waverly, WV, Patricia Ann Hillard and husband, Pete, Waverly, WV,and  Diana Carol Lawson, and husband, Art, Broken Arrow, OK; five  Grandchildren:  Timothy Alley, Robert Alley, Tyler Payton, Koty McLaughlin, and Dustin McLaughlin.

The family will receive friends at the Springfield Assembly of God Church, Springfield, WV on Monday, December 29 from 10 - 11 a.m.   The Celebration of Life service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 29, 2008 at the Springfield Assembly of God Church, Springfield, WV,  with Dr. Tom Gulbronson officiating.  Military honors will be accorded at the church  following the service.  A dinner reception will immediately follow at the church. Interment  will be private in the Springfield Hill Cemetery.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Hospice of the Panhandle, 122 Waverly Court, Martinsburg, WV  25401.

BETTY JANE COSNER

Betty Jane Cosner, 84,  of Winchester, VA formerly of Romney, WV, died at the Ruxton Center, Winchester, VA on  December  24, 2008.   She was born on July 5, 1924 in Scheer, WV, the daughter of the late Warner and Freda (Likens) Hanlin.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther D. Cosner and one son, Leroy Cosner.

Mrs. Cosner was employed as a nursing assistant at the Kidwell Nursing Home, Romney, WV.   She is survived by: two Sons:  Leon Cosner, Harrisonburg, VA and Ronald Cosner, Capon Bridge, WV; one Daughter:  Helen Frick, Crossville, TN, and four Sisters:  Laura Shreeves, Oakland, MD, Glenna Streets, Petersburg, WV,  Leona Dawson, Cabins, WV, and Evelyn Bosley, Winchester, VA; eight Grandchildren, eight  Great Grandchildren and one  Great Great Grandson

The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 27, 2008 at the Shaffer Funeral Home from 11:00 a.m. until time of service at 1:00 p.m. at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney,  with Rev. Ken Smith officiating.  Interment  will be in the Indian Mound Cemetery, Romney, WV.

CLARENCE LONZO SMITH, JR.

Clarence Lonzo Smith, Jr., 77, of Romney, WV  died Sunday, December 14, 2008 at the Long Term Care Center, Hampshire Memorial Hospital, Romney.  He was born on August 24, 1931 at Pine Hills near Augusta, WV, the  son of the late Clarence Lonzo and Sadie (Loy) Smith, Sr.

Mr. Smith was a graduate of Romney High School, Class of 1949.  He retired from General Telephone Company in 1990.  He had previously hauled pulpwood and was always a farmer.   Mr. Smith enjoyed his hobby of collecting antique glass and crocks. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Coralena Speelman Smith; two Daughters:  Sue Ann Dowden and husband, Scott of Winchester, VA;  Kathy Jo Hipkiss and husband, Wylie of Romney, WV; one  Brother:  Robert A. Smith , Kirby, WV and fiancée, Paula Nesmith, Capon Bridge, WV; three  Grandchildren:  Krista Rudolph and husband, Josh of King George, VA, Trisha Archer and husband, Craig of Winchester, VA,   Patrick  McCord and fiancée, Jenna Maphis of Romney, WV; one  Great Grandson, Seth Rudolph, and several nieces and nephews. 

The family will receive friends at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney on Thursday, December 18, 2008 from 1-3 p.m.  A memorial service will follow the visitation immediately at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 18 at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, WV   with Pastor James Mou officiating.

At Mr. Smith’s request his body was cremated and interment will be private.  Memorials   may be made to the American Cancer Society. 

MACEL MARIE JONES

Macel  Marie  Jones, 76, of Springfield, WV, died December 6, 2008 at her residence.  Mrs. Jones was born on June 18, 1932 in Leslie, WV, the  daughter of the late Samuel P. and Lula Ellen (Reed) Ellison.  She was preceded in death by her husband William F. Jones III in 1979.

Mrs. Jones was a devoted grandmother.  She enjoyed sewing, raising plants, especially roses, and just being at home.  She is survived by one daughter:  Patricia Smith, Lakeland, WV, two brothers:  Price “Junior” W. Ellison, Pasadena, MD, and Robert Ellison, Pasadena, MD’ four sisters:  Bonnie S. Ginevan, Pasadena, MD, Lois A. Adkins, Moorefield, WV, June E. Largent, Levels, WV, and  Judy D. Blevins, Romney, WV; six  Grandchildren:  Donnie K. Smith, Romney, WV, Melinda J. Smith, Moorefield, WV, Charles D. Smith, Ft. Ashby, WV, Sabrina M. Conard, Romney, WV, Amber R. Conard,  Romney, WV, and Thomas A. Conard, Romney, WV; five  Great Grandchildren:  Christopher Digman, Dakota Smith, Trinity Smith,  Devon Smith, Justin Smith and one  Great Great Grandson:  Hunter Helms.

The family will receive friends at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney  on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. Graveside services and interment will be Thursday, December 11, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Glen Haven Memorial Park, Glen Burnie, MD.

DOROTHY "DOT" WHITEMAN

Dorothy “Dot” A. Whiteman, 86, of Junction, WV died Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at the Hampshire Center, Romney, WV 

“Dot” was born on April 20, 1922 in Hampshire County, WV, the  daughter of the late Benjamin H. and Maggie Virginia (Yost) Pyles.  She was preceded in death by her husband, James C. Whiteman, October 27, l995  and one daughter, Nancy Mae Whiteman. “Dot” was a member of the Marvin Chapel United Methodist Church, Purgitsville, WV.   She is survived by: one Sister,Nancy C. Bowman, Burlington, WV and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the Shaffer Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 from 4-8 p.m.  The funeral will be Thursday, November 20, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, WV  with Rev. Gary Gorley officiating.  Interment  will be in the Arnold Cemetery, Junction, WV

EMMA GERALDINE ADAMS

Emma Geraldine Adams, 64, of Romney, WV  died November 29, 2008 at her residence.    She was born on May 30, 1944 in Beckley,  the  daughter of the late Millard and Nora Virginia (Pruitt) Ward.  She was preceded in death by one daughter, Tammy A. Buchanan. 

Mrs. Adams moved to Romney 16 years ago from the Washington metro area where she had been employed as a dietician at Laurel Regional Hospital, Laurel, MD.  She continued her career as dietician at Hampshire Center for 5 years.  Mrs. Adams enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting, and loved animals.

She is survived by her husband, Charles R. “Buddy” Adams, Jr, three daughters:  Debbie A. Ruiz, Bowie, MD,  Tracy L. Adams-Mazzie, Ridgeley, WV, and  Diana R. “Melissa” Rumfelt-Porter; five Grandchildren: Jason, Shannon, Christopher, Justin, and Kayla and six  Great Grandchildren.  Mrs. Adams was one of eighteen children

All services will be private.

ROBERT WALTER LUZADER

Robert Walter Luzader, 79, of Burlington, WV,  died November 27, 2008 at Heartland of Keyser, Keyser, WV. Mr. Luzader was born February 7, 1929 in  Winsor Heights, WV, the  son of the late Luther Edward and Cleo Margaret (Clair) Luzader.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Twila Mae (Whetzel) Luzader.   Mr. Luzader retired as storekeeper in the Nuclear Equipment Division of Babcock-Wilcox, Barberton, Ohio.  He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Luzader is survived by one Brother, Dale Leslie Luzader, Akron, Ohio and one  Sister,  Evelyn Moorhead, Akron, Ohio and  very special friends, Mr. and Mrs.  Robert Dawson, Burlington, WV.

Friends will be received on Monday, December 1, 2008 at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon.  A graveside service will be held on Monday, December 1, 2008 at 12:30 p.m. at the Beaver Run Cemetery, Junction, WV, with Rev. Preston J. Miller officiating.  Interment  will be in Beaver Run Cemetery, Junction, WV.  Military graveside rites will be accorded by the veterans’ organizations of Hampshire County.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Shaffer Funeral Home, Inc. Romney, WV.

GARY A. CORBIN, SR.

Gary A. Corbin, Sr., 68, of Augusta, WV,  died at the Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, VA on November 6, 2008.  Mr. Corbin was born on January 4, 1940 in Romney, WV, the  son of the late Marvin William and Sally Kathryn (Raines) Corbin. He was preceded death by one brother, Norman K. Corbin and one sister, Pauline C. Seek. 

Mr. Corbin was born and raised in Hampshire County and was employed by the Federal Government as a Forester for the Department of Interior and National Park Service.  He loved hunting, fishing, and playing country and gospel music on his guitar.  Mr. Corbin attended the Augusta Assembly of God Church  and the Moorefield Assembly of God Church.

Mr. Corbin is survived by his wife of 48 years, Shirley R. (Clarke) Corbin  whom he married in 1960; one son Gary A. Corbin, Jr., Augusta, WV, one brother,   W. Wayne Corbin, Laplata, MD, one Sister, Sharon Marie George, Winchester, VA, one  Grandson, Jordan Allen Corbin and many nieces and nephews

The family will receive friends at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney on Sunday, November 9, 2008 from 6-8 p.m.   Funeral  services will be Monday, November 10, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at the Shaffer Funeral Home  with Rev. Franklin Meyers officiating.  Interment  will be in Ebenezer Cemetery, Romney, WV.

MARY CATHERINE DYE

Mary Catherine Dye, 101, of Augusta, WV formerly of Alexandria, VA,  died on November 3, 2008 at the Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg, WV.

She was born on September 21, 1907 in Washington, D.C. , the  daughter of the late Charles and Mary (Berry) Norfolk.:  She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Waldo Dye; four brothers and three sisters.  She is survived by: one Son:  Stanley Marvin Dye, Amosville, VA, one  Daughter:  Sandra Arline Bertsch, Augusta, WV, nine Grandchildren, 28 Great Grandchildren, and 6 Great Great Grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at the Lighthouse Baptist Church, Alexandria, VA   with Pastor Philip Bishop officiating. Interment  will be at Mt. Comfort Memorial Cemetery, Alexandria, VA.
