JAMES EDWARD HASLACKER

James Edward Haslacker,  86, of Romney, WV,  died May 31, 2011 at Heartland of Keyser, Keyser, VA.   Mr. Haslacker was born on January 26, 1925 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of the late Charles O. and Bertie Katherine (Mayhew) Haslacker.  In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary Susan (Brown) Haslacker; one son, James R. Haslacker; two Brothers:  Elvin L. and Charles J. Haslacker; and one sister, Maxine Creech.

Mr. Haslacker served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was a member of the VFW Wappocomo Post 1101, Romney.  He was Baptist by faith.  Mr. Haslacker was the Scout Master for Troop 32, Boy Scouts of America;  retired as an auto mechanic from Pancake Chevrolet and later worked part-time at the Tire Distributors, Romney, WV.  Mr. Haslacker was an avid fisherman.

He is survived by his companion, Leafy Lewis, Romney, WV; two  Brothers:  Herman R. Haslacker, El Paso, Texas and Raymond “Fred” Haslacker, Shanks, WV; four Grandchildren and six  Great Grandchildren

The family will receive friends at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, WV  on Thursday, June 2, 2011 from 6-8 p.m.  A graveside service with military honors will be Friday, June 3, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Indian Mound Cemetery, Romney, WV  with Pastor Jack Hanks officiating.  Interment will be at Indian Mound Cemetery, Romney.   Memorials may be made to  Mountain Hospice, Inc., PO Box 1284, Keyser, WV  26726

 

ROBERT EASTON DAVY

Robert Easton Davy,  83,   of Purgitsville, WV, died on May 20th, 2011 at home.  Mr. Davy was born on May 11th, 1928 in Junction, WV, the  son of the late Samuel Lee Roy Davy and Anna Natheleen (Harrison) Davy.   In addition to his parents, Mr Davy was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Eugene Davy, four brothers; Paul, Hilton, Richard Glen and Samuel Davy; two sisters; Lola Susler and Mary Hartman.

Mr. Davy worked for Potomac Edison for 30 years and one month.  He was a man whose life was about the outdoors.  He loved to farm, work in the garden, tinker with mechanical equipment and specialized in keeping knives and mower blades razor sharp.  He raised five wonderful daughters, and did so with a firm hand.  He was very proud of all of them for their accomplishments, and dearly loved them and his grandchildren.  The love he had for his grandchildren was evident in many ways, including a fair share of horsing around and being a kid with them.

Surviving is his wife of 56 years, Freeda E. Davy; five daughters; Roberta Gail Ketterman and husband, Steve of Petersburg, WV, Teresa Estella Brown and husband Robert, Strasburg, VA., Patricia L.D. Miller, Moorefield, WV., Virginia Lynn Davy Howdyshell and husband Eugene T., Wiley Ford, WV., and Bobbi Denise Nesselrodt and husband Todd, Cumberland, MD; one  brother; Earl Davy, Purgitsville, WV; five  sisters; Beverly Davy, Purgitsville, WV., Bertha High, Winchester, VA., Louise Liller, Old Fields, WV., Wanda Helman, Purgitsville, WV., and Dorothy Davy,  Purgitsville, WV; five grandchildren; Robert and Dwight Haslacker, Christine Lucas, MaKayla Miller and Mallory Howdyshell; and seven great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the Shaffer Funeral Home in Romney on Monday, May 23, 2011 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm.  The funeral service will be at the Shaffer Funeral Home onTuesday, May 24, 2011 at 12 noon with Rev. Larry Shrout officiating.  Interment will be in  Elijah High Cemetery, Purgitsville, WV.  Memorials may be made to:  Hospice of the Panhandle, 122 Waverly Ct., Martinsburg, WV  25403 OR American Cancer Society.

 

WALTER KENNETH KILE

Walter Kenneth Kile,  81,  of Romney, WV,   died on May 15, 2011 at Hampshire Memorial Hospital, Romney, WV. Mr. Kile was born on January 6, 1930 in Black Oak,Maryland, the  son of the late Loy Thorne Kile and Hazel Mary (Kimble) Kile.   In addition to his parents, Mr. Kile was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Virginia Charlton Kile; four brothers; Raymond, Boyd, Earl and Glen and two sisters; Catherine Weasonforth and Mabel Charlton.

Walter lived and worked in the Romney area for the past 65 years.  He worked for, and along with, Bill Parker in farming and dairy farming for over 60 years.  Walter’s life revolved around physical work of all kinds.  For years, he cut, split and hauled wood for many in the area.  Physical impairment did not keep him from his wood cutting; he continued to cut and split wood even when on crutches and had to sit on a bucket to do so.  He enjoyed hunting, working in his garden and traveling with his family.

He is survived by three daughters; Nancy Ellen Cain of Moorefield, Shirley Evelyn Kile of Moorefield and Linda Mae Lawson of Romney; two sisters; Janet P. Rotruck of  and Monica S. Dinteman both of Keyser; six grandchildren; Jeff Helmick, Jamie Kile, Kristy Cleaver, Jacqueline Kile, Renee’ Stiltner, and Michael Lawson; eleven great- grandchildren; Jeffery, Tanton, Kayla, Amanda, Zachary, Tyson, Trennon, Haddin, Brooklyn, Kayden and Ryan.

The family will receive friends at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, WV on Wednesday, May 18th,  from 6-8 pm.  The funeral service will be at the Shaffer Funeral Home on Thursday, May 19th at 11:00 a.m.  with Pastors Preston Miller and Burl Charlton officiating.   Interment will be in Arnold Cemetery, Junction, WV.

 

WILLIAM "BILL" EASTON NEALIS

William “Bill” Easton Nealis, 81,  of  Romney, WV, died May 7, 2011 at Lion Center, Cumberland, MD.  Bill was born on July 10, l929 in Romney, WV the  son of the late William Garland Nealis and Myrtle (Simmons) Nealis Presgraves.   Besides his parents, Bill was preceded in death by one step son, R. Scott Shoemaker and several sisters.

Bill served in the US Army during WWII and was a life member of the VFW Wappocomo Post 1101, Romney, WV.  He was a member of the Community Assembly of God Church, Romney.  He retired in 1994 from the WV Schools for the Deaf and Blind after 20 years of service as a security guard.  Prior to working at the school, Bill was employed at Kinney Shoe Company, Romney, WV and as a guard at the prison at White Post, VA .

Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Betty (Showalter) Nealis; one  Step Son:  Harry “Billy” William Shoemaker, Jr., Long Beach, CA; two  Step Daughters:  Sonya Jean Racey, Falling Waters, WV and Pami Ann Frazier, Warrenton, VA; and one  Brother:  Paul Nealis, Romney, WV; one  half-Brother:  Clifton “Buddy” Presgraves, Romney, WV; one Sister:  Betty Bradfield, Woodstock, VA; one  half-Sister:  Nancy Bowman, Romney, WV; six  Step-grandchildren and eight Step-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, WV on Monday, May 9, 2011 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm.  The funeral will be Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at 11:00 am at the Shaffer Funeral Home  with Pastor Dan Dennison officiating.  Interment  with military honors will be at Ebenezer Cemetery, Romney, WV.  Memorials  may be made to either the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., 17th Floor, Chicago, IL  60601-7633 or your church.

   

ARNO WAYNE SHINGLETON

Arno Wayne Shingleton,  94,  of Romney, WV,  died on May 6, 2011 at WMHS, Cumberland, MD.   Arno was born on January 8, 1917 in Shanks, WV, the  son of the late Thomas Edward and Clersia Viola (Doyle) Shingleton.  Besides his parents, Arno was preceded in death by his wife of  39 years, Genieve “Turk”  Hardee Shingleton on  August 12, 1997; three brothers, Carl B. Shingleton, Ray E. Shingleton, and Glenn E. Shingleton; and one sister, Audra Russell

Arno was a graduate of McKinley High School in Washington, D.C.   He served in the U.S. Army during WWII along with his twp brothers, Hoy and Glenn and  was a Warrant Officer  in the 774th Tank Batallion.  Arno was a life-long member of the V.F.W. Wappocomo Post 1101,  the American Legion Hampshire Post 91 and the Loyal Order of the Moose, all of Romney.  During the 1950’s, he was very active in coaching Little League in Romney and was a volunteer fireman for the Romney Fire Department.  He always took time to honor our military by  participating in funeral honor guards and decorating the town of Romney with American flags on patriotic holidays. Arno was an autobody repairman for most of his adult life and was the oldest active bodyman in the Metropolitan D.C. area.  For the past nine years Arno has been a resident of Hampshire Center where he received excellent care.

Surviving is one son:  Dennis “ Denny” A. Shingleton, and wife, Judy of Dripping  Springs, Texas; one  Step-son:  Richard "Dick" Lee Lawson, Dallas, Texas; one  Brother:  Hoy G. Shingleton, Sr. Romney, WV; three  granddaughters: Jamie,  K.C. and Brooke Shingleton; two  step-grandchildren: Michelle Lawson Whittaker and Wayne Lawson; and three  step-great grandchildren:  Preston and Avery Whittaker and Ciarra Lawson.

The family will receive friends at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, WV on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm.  The funeral service will be at the Shaffer Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at 11:00 a.m.  with  Dr. Roy Knight officiating.   Interment  with military honors will be at Indian Mound Cemetery, Romney.
