LEWIS DEITRICH PUGH Lewis Deitrich Pugh, age 96, of Winchester, VA, formerly of Romney, passed away Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at his residence. Mr. Pugh was born on February 24, 1915 son of the late Daniel Elmer and Elizabeth May Schnibbe Pugh. Mr.Pugh was a graduate of Romney High School and attended Marshall University.
He served in the U.S. Army in the European theater during WWII. Following his service he owned and operated Romney Exxon Station until his retirement. He was a member of Romney First United Methodist Church, Ali Ghan Shriners, Cumberland, MD, Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, S.J., USA, and Clinton Lodge #86 A.F. & A.M. He served on Romney’s Town Council and was a member of the American Legion Hampshire Post #91.
MARKUS "MARKIE" NATHANIEL CLOWER Markus “Markie” Nathaniel Clower, 35, of Romney, WV, died at his residence on June 27, 2011 surrounded by his mother, Judy; step-dad of 25 years, Sam; brother, Matt; Aunt Becky and Uncle Jim. “Markie” was born on April 8, 1976 in Cumberland, MD, the son of Judith “Judy” Kay (Duling) Clower-Nazelrod, Romney, WV and the late Earl Kenneth Clower. Besides his father, “Markie” was also preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Allen P. and Geraldine E. Duling; paternal grandfather, E.O. Clower, step-grandmother, Mildred J. Nazelrod and cousin Timothy A. Duling. In addition to his mother, “Markie” is survived by his step-father of 25 years, Edward “Sam” Samuel Nazelrod; Paternal Grandmother: Pauline Clower, PA; Step Grandfather: Jonah K. Nazelrod, Sr., Romney, WV; one Brother: Matthew “Matt” Earl Clower, Romney, WV; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends at the Shaffer Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 29, 2011 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Graveside services will be private with Mr. Glen Self officiating. Interment will be at Ebenezer Cemetery, Romney, WV. Memorials may be made to the Hampshire County Special Services Center in memory of Markus N. Clower; 9 Industrial Blvd., Romney, WV 26757.
RUTH RACHEL HOTTINGER Ruth Rachel Hottinger, 90, formerly of Romney, WV, died June 22, 2011 at Phelps Memorial Hospital, Sleepy Hollow, NY. Ruth was born on November 18, 1920 in Ft. Seybert, WV, the daughter of the late Scott and Bessie (Wilfong) Ritchie. Besides her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, William E. Hottinger; one brother, Raymond Ritchie; and one sister, Ina Mae Umberger. Ruth moved to Romney in 1964 from Brandywine, WV. She was a member of the Romney First United Methodist Church where she served many years on the Altar Guild and was a member of the United Methodist Women, the GFWC, the American Legion Hampshire Post #91 Ladies Auxiliary all of Romney, and volunteered at the Burlington United Methodist Family Services. Before transferring her membership to the OES Romney Chapter #84 she had been Past Worthy Matron of the OES in Franklin, WV. Surviving are two Daughters: Dorothy Sharples, Westbrook, CT and Loretta J. Hottinger, Mt. Vernon, NY; two Brothers: Harlan Ritchie, Broadway, VA and Berlin Ritchie, Lincolnton, NC; six Sisters: Mildred Briggs, Fairfax, VA, Erma May of Broadway, VA, Leona Hottinger, Brandywine, WV, Arlene Kyger, Midway Park, NC, Anna Lee Burkholder, Harrisonburg, VA, and Wanda Simmers, Harrisonburg, VA; three Grandchildren: Jeffery M. Davis, II, Westbrook, CT; Russell Detres, Mt. Vernon, NY and Katharine Palmer, Briarcliff Manor, NY The family will receive friends at the Romney First United Methodist Church on Saturday, June 25 from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. The O.E.S. Romney Chapter #84 will conduct a service at 10:45 a.m. The funeral service will be Saturday, June 25, 2011 at the Romney First United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. Roy Knight officiating. NORMA MARIE BURNS Norma Marie Burns, 66, of Purgitsville, WV, died June 15, 2011 at the Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, VA. Norma was born on August 12, 1944 in Junction, WV, the daughter of the late Paul Raymond and Beatrice Maxine (Helman) Davy. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Paula Ann Didawick. Norma graduate from Romney High School, Class of 1963. She was retired having been employed by the Hampshire County Board of Education as a Teacher’s Aid for 29 1/2 yrs. She is survived by three sons: Ernest Paul Burns, Greg Allen Burns, and Timothy Scott Burns all of Purgitsville, WV; one brother: Raymond Leroy Davy, Bunker Hill, WV; three sisters: Twila Smith, Romney, Darlene Kesner, Capon Bridge, and Robin Sue Bohrer, Martinsburg, WV; and one Granddaughter: Alexandra “Lexie” Faith Duckett, Keyser, WV The family will receive friends at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, WV from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, June 17, 2011. The funeral will be at the Shaffer Funeral Home on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. John Walker officiating. Interment will be at Elijah High Cemetery, Purgitsville, WV.
MILDRED PAULINE (GEESAMAN) BRICKER Mildred Pauline (Geesaman) Bricker, 87, of Romney, WV, died June 14, 2011 at the Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, VA. Mrs. Bricker was born on October 4, 1923 in Rouzerville, Pa., the daughter of the late Chancey Blaine and Blanche May (Slaysman) Geesaman. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. Bricker, Sr., June 11, 2007; and four sisters: Mary, Ella, Irene and Ema. Mrs. Bricker graduated from Waynesboro High School, Waynesboro, PA Class of 1942. She retired with 23 years of service as Food Service Manager having been employed by the Hampshire County Board of Education, Romney, WV. She is survived by: one Son: Robert C. Bricker, Jr., Baltimore, MD; one Daughter: Cathy J. Horton, Kingsport, TN; one Brother: James Geesaman, Scotts Depot, WV and one Grandson: Todd Horton and wife, Katie , Charlotte, NC At her request her body was cremated and interment will be at Harbaugh Church Cemetery, Rouzerville, PA. THE REV. DOCTOR MICHAEL GERALD SIMON The Rev. Doctor Michael Gerard Simon, 65, of Augusta, WV, died June 7, 2011 at his residence under the care of the Hospice of the Panhandle. Rev. Simon was born in Wheeling, WV on January 22, 1946, the son of the late Michael J. and Betty (Workman) Simon. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, Nick Simon. Rev. Simon attended a Catholic Seminary in Butler, PA., finishing High School. He served as a Lt. in the U.S. Army as a nurse and later earned his Degree as a Registered Nurse, specializing in psychology. In later years he earned a PHD in theology. Rev. Simon served as a Hospice Chaplain in the Wheeling, WV and Steubenville, Ohio areas. He enjoyed reading and collecting coins and stamps. His primary focuses were his family and his spirituality and was known for his particularly “dry” sense of humor. Rev. Simon served Emanuel Episcopal Church, Moorefield and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Romney at the same time for six years. Most recently, he served St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Berkeley Springs. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Kathe Jean (Prager) Simon; three Daughters: Cheryl Murrin and husband, Jim, Columbus, Ohio, Theresa Perry, Hartfield, Virginia and Shawn Drewett and husband, Jason, Shadyside, Ohio; one Brother: Fred Simon, Canada and nine Grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at the Mt. Zion Episcopal Church, Hedgesville, WV with The Rt. Rev. W. Michie Klusmeyer, Bishop, officiating. Memorials may be made to the Mt. Zion Episcopal Church, Hedgesville, WV or the St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Berkeley Springs, WV. |
