JAMES SLOAN BONAR

James Sloan Bonar, 72, of Annandale, VA and Romney, WV passed away  on Monday, June 29, 2009 at home after a valiantly fought battle with cancer.  Jim was born on December 4, 1936 at Fort Hill Farm in Burlington, WV.  His parents were Clyde Bonar of Belleville (Wood County), WV and Cornelia Sarah Harmison Bonar of Fort Hill Farm.  Jim attended Burlington School and Keyser High School, graduating in 1954.  He was in 4H, and was a member of the National Honor Society and Burlington Presbyterian Church.  He attended Potomac State College, and graduated from West Virginia University in 1959, earning a BS degree in Animal Husbandry.  While at WVU he enrolled in ROTC and began a lifelong passion with aviation, winning accolades as a pilot in the US Army.  On campus, he was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity where his father had been a charter member in the class of 1924.  He was inducted into Alpha Zeta honorary and the National Block and Bridle Club. Jim spent his military career as a fixed-wing and helicopter pilot in the US Army and Army Reserve for 31 years, retiring as a Master Pilot at the rank of Colonel, Infantry.  He spent his civilian career as a soil and water conservationist, beginning with the US Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service in West Virginia, where he worked for ten years. He served an additional  19 years at USDA headquarters in Washington, DC, and spent the final nine years of his civilian career  with the Prince William Soil and Water Conservation District in Virginia.  Since 2002, he has devoted full time to farming, completing several significant conservation initiatives on the family farm in West Virginia.  In 1960, Jim married Molly Moss Scanlon of Romney, WV and they enjoyed 49 years of marriage.  They have two children; Sarah Parker Bonar Johnson married to Randolph Glenn Johnson, Jr.  of Middletown, MD and James Sloan Bonar, Jr., of Glenside, PA .  Jim has two grandchildren, Parker Randolph Johnson and James Garrett Johnson of Middletown, MD.  He is also survived by a sister Mary Alice Bonar Hannah and brother Charles Alvin Bonar, both of Burlington WV. The family will receive friends at Little Meadows Farm, River Road, Thursday,  July 2,  from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.  Funeral Service will be held Friday, July 3 at 11:00 AM at Romney Presbyterian Church with Rev. Barbara Johnson and the Rev. Dr. Chris Looker officiating.  Interment will be in Branch Mountain Cemetery, Three Churches, WV.    The family requests  donations in memory of James Sloan Bonar be made to:

BEULAH MAE MONGOLD

Beulah Mae Mongold, 89, of Romney, WV died Monday, June 22, 2009 at the Hampshire Center, Romney, WV.  She was born on February 10, 1920 in Glebe, WV the  daughter of the late James Tot and Mary Edna (Ours) Buckley.  She was preceded in death by her husband, William F. Mongold,  two sisters and ten brothers. Beulah was a member of the Romney Presbyterian Church attending at St.  Luke Presbyterian, River Road.  She was a 45-year member of the American Legion Hampshire Post #91 Ladies Auxiliary and a 28-year member of the VFW Wappocomo Post 1101 Ladies Auxiliary.  Beulah worked at Kidwell's Nursing Home and later retired from the Hampshire Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Center, Romney. She is survived by:  one Son:  Marvin W. Mongold, Romney, WV; two Daughters:  Edith W. Jordan, Romney and Lena M. Kenney, Shanks, WV; one  Sister:  Virginia “Ginny” L. Cox, Shanks, WV; four  grandchildren; seven  great grandchildren and six 6 great great grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 7-9 pm at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, WV.  Graveside services  will be on Wednesday, June 24, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke Cemetery, River Road, Romney,  WV  with Rev. Barbara Johnson officiating.  Interment will be in St. Luke Cemetery.

DOUGLAS PAUL SHOEMAKER

Douglas Paul Shoemaker,  60, of Ridgeley, WV died Saturday, June 20, 2009 in Ridgeley, WV.  He was born on February 28, 1949 in Purgitsville, WV, the son of  Dolly Mae (Haggerty) Shoemaker,  Ridgeley, WV and the late Ivan J. Shoemaker.  In addition to his mother he is survived by one  brother:  Leslie J. Shoemaker, Sr., Augusta, WV; two  nephews and one niece and several great nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney on Wednesday,  June 24, 2009 from 7-9 pm.  Funeral services will be Thursday, June 25, 2009 at 11:00 am at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, WV  with Rev. Harold Shaffer officiating.  Interment  will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Purgitsville, WV.

GERALDINE L. GLASS

Geraldine L. Glass, 81, of Romney, WV, died at 6:30 p.m. on June 12, 2009, at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pittsburg, PA. Born July 5, 1927, she was the daughter of the late George F. Messick and Bessie Beatty Messick. She was preceded in death by her husband, Retired Air Force Major James E. Glass in 1978, one sister, Virginia Messick Leatherman in 1960, and one nephew, Lewis Leatherman in 2008. She was employed by Eastern Allegheny Council of Human Services as a Health and Social Services Assistant for 14 years. A member of the Romney First Baptist Church, she served on the local, association and state level of the American Baptist Womens’ Ministries. Surviving are one daughter, Linda S. Browning and husband (John) of Romney, WV; two sons, Richard L. Glass and wife (Bobbi) of Asheville, NC; and Michael E. Glass of Charlotte, NC; two grandsons, Richard L. Glass II and wife (Monica) of Asheville, NC; and Jeremy M. Glass and wife (Dottie) of Durham, NC; five great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Betty Blake Messick of Romney, and Sally Messick Seeders and husband (David) of Romney; several nephews, and one niece. Family and friends will be received at the Shaffer Funeral Home, 230 East Main Street, Romney, WV, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17, 2009. A memorial service will be conducted at the Shaffer Funeral Home on Thursday, June 18, 2009, at 11 a.m., by Rev. Ed Germann.  Interment will follow at 2 p.m., in the Winchester National Cemetery, Winchester, VA.

COREY MICHAEL WINKLES

Corey Michael Winkles,  36,  of Romney, WV  died Saturday, June 6, 2009 at Hampshire Memorial Hospital, Romney.  He was born on November 12, 1972 in Winchester, VA  the son of Michael D. and Kathy Lynn (Potter) Winkles of Romney.  Corey was preceded in death by one son, Shiloh and his paternal grandfather, James Winkles.Corey was a graduate of Hampshire High School, Class of l990 and the Art Institute of Pittsburgh.  Besides his parents,  Corey is survived by: one Daughter:  Eve Winkles, Indianapolis, IN; one brother:  Joel Winkles, Tujunga, CA; Maternal Grandparents:  Ward and Virginia Potter, Romney,  WV and Paternal Grandparents: Dorothy and Bill Jewell, Ridgeley, WV. A celebration of life service will be held at a later date.

JOHN ROBERT HOUSEHOLDER

John Robert Householder, 59,  of Romney, WV died Friday, June 5, 2009 at Hampshire Memorial Hospital, Romney, WV.  He was born on April 20, l950 in Keyser, WV, the son of  Mary Louise (Day) Householder, Romney and the late Robert Earl Householder.  Besides his father, John was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Ron Riser. John graduated from Keyser High School, Class of 1968, Potomac State College, Class of 1970 and Shepherd College, Class of 1972.   He taught school in Mineral County for 32 years and retired December of 2005.  John was a great lover of music and played with the Thunderhill Singers.  He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Romney, WV. John is survived by his wife, Annis Clark Householder; two sons:  J. Patrick Householder and wife, Jill, Paden City, WV, Shawn R. Householder, Morgantown, WV; one daughter:  M. Samantha  Walker and husband, Matthew, Hagerstown, MD; one  Sister:  Sharon Riser, New Market, MD; one  granddaughter:  Kaitlyn Alexis Householder     and one Nephew:  Travis Riser. The family will receive friends on Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, WV.  The service will be at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, School St., Romney, WV on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at 11:00 am  with Father William J. LARRY GLENN HOTT

Larry Glenn Hott, 56,  of Romney, WV  died Thursday, June 4, 2009 at  home surrounded by his family.   He was born on February 27, l953 in Cumberland, MD, the son of Alfred Glenn and Shirley (Judy) Hott, Romney, WV.  He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Terry and a sister, Donna Stickley. Larry graduated from Hampshire High School, Class of l971.  He worked at O'Sullivan Corporation and retired in 2007 from the Green Bay Packaging Company both of Winchester, VA.  He played in numerous bands, the latest being “Unwound”. He is survived by his soul mate, Janet; one Son:  Michael Hott and wife, Sheila, Romney, WV, one  Daughter:  Melissa Kifer and husband, Brian, Romney, WV; two Brothers:  John Hott and wife, Dorothy, Romney, WV and Gerald Hott and wife, Beth, Augusta, WV; three Grandchildren:  Donald Raigner, Erin and Lauren Hott and several nieces and nephews. A celebration of life service will be held at a later date.  Memorials may be made to the charity of choice.
