CHARLES J. LIKENS

Charles J. Likens,  62,  of Romney, WV,  died at his residence on Sunday, July 24, 2011.   Mr. Likens  was born on March 9, 1949 in Romney, WV, the  son of the late James Dailey and Alma Kathleen (Largent) Likens.   Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister Virginia “Tootsie” Elizabeth Casto.

Charles was a graduate of Hampshire High School Class of 1967.  He was a veteran of the Viet Nam War having served in the U.S. Army; and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose  # 1371 , the American Legion Hampshire Post #92 and the VFW Wappocomo Post 1101 all of  Romney, WV.

He is survived by:  one  son:  James Craig Likens, Winchester, VA; one  Sister:  Karen Ann Wolfe, Moorefield, WV; one  Brother-in-law:  William “Bunnie” Casto, Romney, WV; one  Granddaughter:  Samantha Likens; three  Nieces:  Aimee D. League, Angela D. Casto, and Jessica Wolfe; one  Nephew:  Stanley Wolfe, Jr. and five  Great nieces and nephews

Graveside services  and interment will be held Sunday, July 31, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at Ebenezer Cemetery, Romney.

JOSEPHINE ELIZABETH (BOWEN) POLAND

Josephine Elizabeth (Bowen) Poland, 92, of Augusta, WV  died at her residence on July 16, 2011.  She was born in Three Churches, WV on August 26, 1918, the  daughter of the late Delsey (Fultz) Bowen  Keller.   Mrs. Poland was also preceded in death by her husband, William Miller Poland  on Dec. 8, 1966 and one grandson, Mark Ballas.

Mrs. Poland  is survived by: one  Son:  William Joseph Poland and wife, Connie of Harlingen, TX; one  Daughter:  Betty Ballas, Annapolis, MD; four  Grandchildren:  Michael A. Ballas, Annapolis, MD,  Michelle Grimes and husband, Bill, Davidsonville, MD,  Beth McMillan and husband, Tim , Grantsville, MD and Matthew Ballas and fiancée, Melanie, Augusta, WV; six Great Grandchildren; one  Great Great Grandson and special friends:  Dailey “Doc” and Joanne Hogbin.

The family will receive friends at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, WV on Friday, July 22, 2011 from 1:00 p.m. until time of  funeral services at 2:00 p.m, with  Dr. Roy Knight officiating.  Interment will be at Indian Mound Cemetery, Romney, WV.

 VIRGINIA R. "GINNY" MAHONEY

Virginia R. “Ginny” Mahoney, 59,  of Winchester, VA formerly of Romney, WV, died  Friday, July 15, 2011 at the Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, VA.  “Ginny” was born on Nov. 5, 1951 in Petersburg, WV, the  daughter of Janet R. (Mayhew) Hose, Romney, WV and the late Blair W. Hose, Sr.  Besides her father she was preceded in death by one brother, Joseph R. Hose

“Ginny” resided in Hampshire County for many years before moving to Winchester.  She enjoyed Indian artifacts and anything to do with Elvis.  “Ginny” very much enjoyed people and loved spending time with her family.

Besides her mother, she is survived by  her son, Eric L. Stickley of Winchester; one brother, Blair W. Hose, Jr., of Augusta, WV and one sister; Linda S. McKee of New Orleans, LA;  five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 pm until time of service at 3:00 pm on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, WV.  Funeral services will be Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at 3 pm at the Shaffer Funeral Home in Romney,  with Rev. Bob Combs  officiating. Interment will be at St. Luke Cemetery, River Road, Romney, WV.

 MARTHA S. MARTIN

Martha S. Martin,  89,  of Romney, WV, died Thursday, July 14, 2011 at the Hampshire Center, Romney, WV.  She was born  November 27, 1921,  in Three Churches, WV, the daughter of the late   R.W. Lewis and Mary Belle “Molly” (Stewart) Lewis.  She was preceded in death by her husband, James Wallace Martin;  her daughter; Retha Jean Buckley; two brothers and seven sisters

Martha was born, raised and lived her entire life in Hampshire County.  She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Romney, WV.  Her life centered around her family and work.  She was a volunteer at the Long Term Care Unit at Hampshire Memorial Hospital and at Helping Hands in Romney, WV.  For many years she worked for, and retired from, the Kenny Shoe Factory.  She enjoyed sewing, baking and taking care of her family.  She is survived by three  Grandchildren, and one Great grandson.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Saturday, July 16, 2011.  Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, July 16th, 2011 at 11 a.m.  at Shaffer Funeral Home in Romney, WV with  Rev. Jack Hanks officiating.  Interment will be in  Branch Mountain Cemetery, Three Churches, WV

 

FRED S. LEE

Fred S. Lee, 58, of  Palm Bay, FL, died January 19, 2011, at home.   He was born May 1, 1952, in Middleburg, VA, the son of  Wayland Harrison Lee and Loretta M. Lee (Smith).   He was preceded in death by his mother, Loretta M. Lee Smith (originally from Romney, WV)

Fred  worked for the City of Palm Bay, FL for 27 years. He is survived by his  father, Wayland H. Lee of Palm Bay, FL; a daughter, Alissa Goodman of Melbourne, FL;  two sisters, Linda Sue Ridgeway of Plains, VA and Kathy Baker of Front Royal, VA;  two grandsons, Preston and Shawn Goodman of Palm Bay, FL.

Graveside services and interment  will be held on Sunday, July 17, 2011 at 3 PM with  Dr.  Roy Knight officiating at Ebenezer Cemetery, Romney, WV.   Arrangements are under the direction of the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, WV.
