230 East maiN STREETMarch 2010 Obituaries VERGIE HOKE MCKEE Vergie Hoke McKee, 95, of Romney, WV died on March 1, 2010 at the Hampshire Center, Romney, WV with family and friends at her side. Vergie was born on November 18, 1914 in Rock Oak, Hampshire County, WV, the daughter of the late Dallas G. and Anna Funk Hoke. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Edgar H. McKee, two brothers and two sisters. Vergie lost her husband at a very young age and continued to work retiring from the Celanese after 35 years. She assisted Dr. J. D. Brown and delivered many babies in the county; did orchard work and housecleaning; her joys were caring for others and putting others ahead of herself, gardening, quilting, sewing and most of all raising her family. Surviving are one daughter, Betty J. Heavener, Romney, WV; two sons, Chester F. McKee and wife Elnora, Augusta, WV and E. Homan McKee, Points, WV and three special nieces; Shirley Wolford, Romney, WV, Carol Schott, Highview, WV and Donna Baker, Augusta, WV; nine grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren. Friends will be received on Wednesday, March 3, 2010, 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, WV. Funeral services will be at 11;30 a.m., Thursday, March 4, 2010, at Romney First Baptist Church, Romney, WV with Rev. Jack Hanks and Rev. Dr. Stephon Reed officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Gore, Va. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Romney First Baptist Church, West Main Street, Romney, WV or Hospice of the Panhandle, 122 Waverly Court Martinsburg WV 25403 DENNY MEADE SLANE Denny Meade Slane, 85, a resident of Sunnyside Retirement Community, Harrisonburg, VA, died March 11, 2010. He was born on June 8, 1924 in Hampshire County, WV, the son of the late Orr Denny and Emma G. Slane. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Mary Jo Pancake Slane. He is survived by a sister, Lowell Slane Kline of Cross Junction, VA; son, Joseph A. Slane, daughter-in-law Krista U. Slane of Birmingham, AL; one grandson Elliott A. Slane of Athens, Georgia; and many nieces and nephews. Denny graduated from Capon Bridge High School, Capon Bridge, WV in 1942. Colonel Slane served 37 years in law enforcement in Virginia including 35 with the Virginia State Police. He began his career as a patrolman in Winchester, VA in 1947 and joined the State Police in 1949 as a trooper. He graduated in the State Police Class of 1949, where he served as president. During his career, he served in Greene and Rockingham counties, Salem-Roanoke, and Chesapeake. In 1977, he was appointed Superintendent of the State Police and served in this capacity until retiring in 1984. From 1985 to 1996 he was Executive Director of Operation Lifesaver, a railroad crossing safety program. Denny designed the State Police flag and in 2000, the Virginia State Police Colonel Denny M. Slane Museum and History Center was named in his honor. Colonel Slane served on the American Red Cross Board, was a member of the Kiwanis Club and Keezletown Ruritan Club, was both a deacon and elder in the Presbyterian Church (USA), and was also active in services and volunteer work at the Meredith Chapel in Sunnyside. A memorial service is scheduled at the Massanutten Presbyterian Church, Penn Laird, VA, March 16, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. Visitation will be at Shaffer Funeral Home in Romney, WV on March 16 from 4 – 6 p.m. with a graveside service at Indian Mound Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 17, 2010. ISAAC "IKE" A. CLINEDINST Isaac “Ike” A. Clinedinst, 90, of Burlington, WV, died March 21, 2010 at Hampshire Memorial Long Term Care Center, Romney, WV. “Ike was born on August 21, 1919 in Junction, WV, the son of the late Lee A. Clinedinst and Cora M. (Whipp) Clinedinst Bennett. He was the last member of his immediate family having also been preceded in death by his brother Ward Clinedinst. “Ike” was a member of the Beaver Run Church of the Brethren for over 70 years. He was a veteran of WWII having served in the U.S. Army Air Force, 585th Bombardment Squadron for over three years, 2 years in Europe with 18 months in the combat zone. He was awarded the presidential unit citation, 6 battle stars and other awards. “Ike” was a life member of the VFW Wappocomo Post 1101, Romney; was an auto mechanic and did body work in Keyser and a machine mechanic employed by the Kenny Shoe Company, Romney, WV. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Martha (Clayton) Clinedinst; two cousins, numerous friends and a very special family “The Dallas and Kathy Sions Family”. JOHN H. WEAVER John H. Weaver, 89, of Romney, WV, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, March 26, 2010 from the Blue Ridge Hospice Residential Care Unit, Winchester, VA. Mr. Weaver was born January 30, 1921 in Fayetteville, PA, the son of the late Edward A. and Anna (Alvus) Weaver. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years Betty D. (Greenley) Weaver; one son, John H. Weaver, Jr.; two brothers, Albert and George Weaver and one sister, Alberta Oller. John was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army Air Force and he was a lifetime member of D.A.V. He was employed by Delta Drilling Company, Tyler, Texas as a drilling supervisor and was a member of the Romney Presbyterian Church, Romney, WV. Mr. Weaver is survived by: two Sons: Ronald L. Weaver and wife, Aurea, Lakehurst, NJ, and Rev. Ed Weaver and wife, Linda, Keyser, WV; two Daughters: Judy A. Beer and husband, Robert, Dubois, PA and Clover D. Malloy and husband, Rick, Baltimore, MD; 11 Grandchildren and 24 Great Grandchildren. The family requests memorials be made to the Romney Presbyterian Church, W.
