January 2009 Obituaries VIRGINIA "DEE" DARE HAINES Virginia “Dee” Dare Haines, 88 of Romney, WV formerly of Points, WV, died January 8, 2009 at Hampshire Center, Romney, WV. She was born on April 23, 1920 in Higginsville, WV, the daughter of the late John Nelson and Elsie Pearl (Lewis) Day. Mrs. Haines was preceded in death by her husband, Robert S. Haines; one brother, John Nelson Day, Jr.; and one grandson, Robert Nelson Haines. “Dee” was a graduate of Romney High School, Class of 1938; a member of the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Points, WV and the United Methodist Women. She was Post Master of the Points Post Office until her retirement in l984. She is survived by two Sons: John Rannells Thompson, and wife, Sandra, Las Vegas, Nevada, Stephen Robert Haines, and wife, Betty, Delray, WV; five Grandchildren: Brian, Dwayne, and Denise Thompson, and Monica Ann and Christopher M. Haines; five Great Grandchildren: Adrianna G. and Kaydence Virginia Haines and 3 others. The family will receive friends at the Shaffer Funeral Home on Sunday, January 11, 2009 from 5-7 p.m. Funeral services will be at the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Points, WV on Monday, January 12, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Harold D. George, Jr. officiating. The body will be taken to the church at 12:00 noon to lie in state one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Points, WV. ANNA VIRGINIA LEWIS Anna Virginia Lewis, 87, of Romney, WV, died January 12, 2009 at Hampshire Memorial Hospital, Romney, WV. She was born on June 15, 1921 in Springfield, WV the daughter of the late George H. and Bertie (Horn) Cox. Mrs. Lewis was preceded in death by her husband , Elwood Ferman Lewis on October 8, 1974 and two daughters, Marva Lee Lewis and Mary Jean Hershey. The last member of her immediate family, she was also preceded in death by six brothers: Thomas Andrew Cox, Andrew Thomas Cox, Russell Jackson Cox, George “Pete” Cox, Willard “Chub” Cox and Clarence “Dick” Cox and one sister, Elsie Viola Lewis. Mrs. Lewis was employed for 20 years as dietician at the Hampshire Memorial Hospital, Romney. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Hampshire Post 91, Romney. She is survived by: one Son: Eddie T. Lewis, and fiancée, Janet Cheshire, Romney; two Daughters: Verda M. Keister, Romney, WV and Susan L. Kidwell, and husband, Denzel , Romney, WV; 11 Grandchildren and 15 Great Grandchildren. Haslacker, 59, of Romney, WV, died Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at the Hampshire Memorial Hospital, Romney, WV. He was born on August 12, 1949 in Winchester, VA, the son of the late James and Mary (Brown) Haslacke. Mr. Haslacker was a graduate of Hampshire High School, Class of l967 and a veteran of the Vietnam War having served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was employed as a tree climber for area logging companies. He enjoyed spending many happy hours at the Wapacomo Family Camp Ground, Romney. He is survived by his wife, Alice D. Haslacker and many other family members. At Mr. Haslacker’s request his body was cremated. The family will receive friends at their residence on Parker Road, Romney on Saturday, January 17, 2009 from 3-6 p.m. RUTH ELLEN SHANHOLTZ Ruth Ellen Shanholtz, 66, of Romney, WV, died Sunday, January 18, 2009 at the Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, VA. She was born on February 15, 1942 in Romney, WV, the daughter of the late Samuel E. and Grace A. (Kesner) Nazelrod. Mrs. Shanholtz was preceded in death by her husband, Elvin B. Shanholtz, Sr. on February 22, 1988, and by four brothers, Harry, Bud, Vernon, and Carl Nazelrod and two sisters, Goldie Self and Bertha Whalen. Mrs. Shanholtz attended the Springfield School in Springfield, WV. She was employed for many years at the Kenny Shoe Company and later retired from Hampshire Manufacturing, Romney. She is survived by: two Sons: Elvin “Bob” B. Shanholtz, Jr. and wife, Janet, Romney, WV, Virgil E. Shanholtz and wife, Michelle, Moorefield, WV; one Daughter: Debra S. Tyree and husband, James M. “Buck” , Romney, WV, one Jonah “Joe” Nazelrod, Romney, WV; two Sisters: Mary Lambert, Romney, WV, and Lena Martin, Verona, VA; five Grandchildren: Heather Shanholtz, Chris Shanholtz and wife, Jennie, Tori Shanholtz, and Casey and Justin Tyree; two Step Grandchildren: Brandon and Gerica Hose and many nieces and nephews. Interment will be at the Augusta Cemetery, Augusta, WV JOHN "JOHNNY" KENNETH STICKLEY John “Johnny” Kenneth Stickley, 72, of Purgitsville, WV, died Thursday, January 22, 2009 at the Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, VA. He was born on July 21, 1936 at Vanderlip, WV, the son of the late John J. and Catherine (Southerly) Stickley. Johnny was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Hartman. Mr. Stickley was a member of the Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, Purgitsville, WV and was employed with Romney Construction and Mineral Fabrications until his retirement in 2000. He then worked for S & S Enterprises. Mr. Stickley is survived by his wife of 51 years, Emma Jean (Keister) Stickley, two Sons: Kenneth G. Stickley and wife, Ellen, Purgitsville, WV, Greg A. Stickley and wife, Maggie, Wardensville, WV; three Brothers: Roger Stickley, Junction, WV, Gene Stickley, Moorefield, WV, and Michael Stickley, Purgitsville, WV; four Sisters: Daphne Fletcher, Baltimore, MD, Phyllis Ellifritz, Keyser, WV, Sharon High, Purgitsville, WV, and Joyce Pritts, Augusta, WV; four Grandchildren: Justin M. She was born on April 24, 1935, in Casar, North Carolina, the daughter of the late Cowen and Anna (Chapman) Hudson. She was preceded in death by one son, David Canipe. Mrs. Addington lived in Springfield approx. 18 years, coming from Rocky Mt. North Carolina. She was a devoted member of the Springfield Assembly of God Church. Mrs. Addington loved taking care of her family and evolved to be a much sought after companion and health care worker for her community. She loved her church and used the bible as a guide for living. She is survived by her husband; Ernest N. Addington, Sr., four Sons: Martin Canipe of Richmond, VA., Johnny Murray, of Owensboro, KY., Ernest Addington, Jr. of Nashville, NC, Timothy Addington of Shelby, NC; six daughters; Sandi Shehadeh of Roanoke Rapids, NC., Patricia Pruett, and her dear husband, Randy, Wendell, NC; Glenna Schnabel of Romney, Teresa Canipe of Tampa, FL., Kimberly Addington of Ohio, and Sara Marie Addington of Springfield, WV. Mrs. Addington was one of 15 children. She is also survived by 23 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. At Mrs. Addington’s request her body was cremated HANNAH MARY OVERHOLT Hannah Mary Overholt, 89 of Romney, WV, died Friday, January 23, 2009 at the Hampshire Center, Romney, WV. Mrs. Overholt was born on April 15, 1919 in Cumberland, MD, the daughter of the late Ira V. and Maude Muriel (Johnston) Cowgill. She was preceded in death by her husband Earl “Swede” Sidney Overholt. Mrs. Overholt was a life long member of the Romney Christian Church. She taught in Hampshire County Public Schools from 1939 until 1944. Substituting until 1961, she then resumed her full time teaching career at the West Virginia School for the Blind until her retirement on June 30, l979. Mrs. Overholt was a member of the West Virginia Retired Teachers’ Association. She is survived by: one Son: John S. Overholt and wife, Susan, Virginia Beach, VA, two Daughters: Judith L. Sharp and husband, Vee J, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Deborah J. Michigan Ave., 17th Floor, Chicago, IL 60601-7633 DAILEY WOODWARD SHOCKEY Dailey Woodward Shockey, 81, of Romney, WV died Monday, January 26, 2009 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, WV. He was born on March 13, l927 in Romney, WV, the son of the late Arthur W. and Tempe L. (Hose) Shockey. Mr. Shockey was preceded in death by three brothers: Guy, Frank J. and Sloan Shockey and three sisters: Clara Hott, Bernice Corbin, and Mildred Cook. Mr. Shockey was a charter member of the Romney Church of God. He first retired as a truck driver having been employed with area trucking firms. He later retired from the B&O Railroad, Cumberland, MD in l992. Mr. Shockey served in the United States Army from l952 to l954. He is survived by his wife, Eva Maxine (Frazier) Shockey, one Foster Son: Dudley Wilson, St. Petersburg, FL, two Step Daughters: Linda Carder, Springfield, WV, Sylvia Malone, Ft. Ashby, WV and one Sister: Margaret Martin, Greencastle, PA; and special friends, Richard and Carolyn Stanley, Romney. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until time of service at 1:00 p.m. at the Romney Church of God with Rev. Raymond Sterling officiating.Interment will be at the Springfield Hill Cemetery, Springfield, WV. Military graveside rites will be accorded by local veterans’ organizations.
MAHLON SYLVESTER MILLER, JR. Mahlon Sylvester Miller, Jr., 44, of Romney, WV died Thursday morning, January 29, 2009 at the Hampshire Memorial Hospital, Romney. He was born on February 12, l964 in Berkeley Springs, WV, the son of the late Mahlon Sylvester Miller, Sr. and Madeline (Riggleman) Cox. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one sister Judy M. Cox. Mr. Miller was employed at the Potomac Center, Romney as a “Direct Support Professional”. He owned the catering business “Imaginations”. Mahlon loved and cared about people, particularly his co-workers. He enjoyed decorating especially at Christmas. Mahlon also loved fishing. Mahlon was an organ donor. He is survived by: six Sisters: Cora F. Miller, Romney, WV, Sharon E. Barnes and husband, Thomas, Romney, WV, Shirley L. Bailey and husband, Rev. Calvin Bailey, Franklin, WV; Hilda F. Cox, Romney, WV, Alice M. Colebank and husband, Gene, Romney, WV, Tammy S. Clayton and husband, Darby, Moorefield, WV; two Brothers: Eugene Cox and wife, Lorraine, Berkeley Springs, WV, and Ronnie Cox and wife, Barbara, Berkeley Springs, WV; and many other family members. A memorial service will be held following the viewing on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at the Shaffer Funeral Home, with Rev. Allen Murlin officiating. Mr. Miller’s body was cremated and his ashes to be scattered in the ocean. PATRICK WOODROW BUCKLEY Patrick Woodrow Buckley, 50, of Springfield, WV went to be with the Lord Thursday, January 29, 2009 at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, MD surrounded by his loved ones after his courageous battle with cancer. He was born on April 1, 1958 in Cumberland, MD, the son of the late Marvin Woodrow and Betty April (Feller) Buckley. Besides his parents he was also preceded in death by his longtime companion, his dog, Molly Anne. Pat graduated from Hampshire High School, Class of 1976. He was employed at Rubbermaid for 10 years. Pat was an avid hunter and enjoyed riding his Harley with his buddies. He will be greatly missed by everyone. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Theresa “Dixie” A. (Everett) Buckley, four Daughters : Sarah E. Everett and special friend, Jeff Cope, Springfield, WV, Heather L. Buckley and special friend, Jerry Bean, Augusta, WV, Amy L. Buckley and special friend, Greg Sirk, Augusta, WV, Brooke A. Buckley , Augusta, WV; one Sister: Jennifer Lyn Buckley Kidwell and husband, Jim, Romney, WV; one Granddaughter: Emily A. Cope; two Grandsons: Joshua A. Sirk and Patrick A. Buckley; one Nephew: J.D. Kidwell and numerous family and friends.
